Motorcycle Security

Less than half of all motorbikes or scooters are fitted with security devices.  But they are an easy target for vehicle thieves and security measures should be taken.  Most bikes or scooters are stolen to order, mainly for parts, and if they are not secure they can easily be wheeled away or carried off in a van.  To make sure your bike is not stolen follow these basic rules.  At night, always park in a well lit area that is busy and full of people.  Use special motorcycle parking areas and look for places with a ‘Secured Car-Park’ sign, and if possible, cover your bike when parked.

Engage the steering lock and use either a high tension cable or chain with a good padlock, or a U-lock through a wheel; or through the frame.  And try to secure your machine to something solid.   such as a security rail or a ground anchor and keep the lock high off the ground as this makes it harder to break.  And most importantly, don’t leave your helmet, gloves, or any other possessions with your machine.

January/February Crime

In early February a NHW member phoned police concerning a vehicle parked in an isolated position for several hours and not easily visible to passing traffic.  The caller was concerned as there appeared to be somebody with the vehicle.  Police officers attended the vehicle and immediately recognised the person as a local male wanted for several local crimes who had until then evaded capture by living rough and avoiding his usual haunts.  He was arrested on the spot and later charged with several offences and remanded to Chippenham Magistrates’ Court.  This is a prime example of how much can be achieved by the Neighbourhood Watch and Police working together.

In this latest bulletin it is clear crime has been quite sporadic in location and type committed.  While Malmesbury and the surrounding area continue to be relatively crime free compared to elsewhere we must remain vigilant and consider reporting anything we feel doesn't seem right. Had the NHW member decided to 'mind their own business' about the car in the field a local criminal may well have been still at liberty committing crime
