Slumdog Millionaire

The Village Hall was packed last Wednesday for the Film Club’s showing of Slumdog Millionaire. The next Film Club, on 26 August, will show a recently released costume drama. Contact Sarah Harmer (01666) 837704 for details.

One in the eye for Opthalmologists

Local ophthalmologist, Brenda Corbin, has won a competition at a trade fair at Birmingham ’s NEC, using her professional skill. The task was to use optical equipment to read tiny words etched inside an artificial eye. Mrs Corbin picked out the five words, and her prize was a piece of up-to-the-minute equipment for her to use in her work.

Fourth Best Kept Village

We almost achieved our targets when we entered the Best Kept Village Competition, as so many people made a huge effort to smarten up the village. Hullavington came fourth in the District Round for large villages in North Wiltshire and received very favourable comments from the judges. “Congratulations on the initiative and quality of the WI flower-garden in the centre of the village. The herb garden and play areas at the school also deserve compliments. Generally verges and gardens were clean and tidy, and the village hall and its surrounds were in good condition. Notice boards were up to date and neat. Unfortunately, litter-dropping in the central bus shelter by a few detracted from the obvious efforts of the majority to present the village to its best advantage. The churchyard and cemetery obviously are cared for, and the conservation area notably does not look neglected, as many do. Shop, PO and pub areas were in good order, and flower displays gave a touch of brightness to a rainy inspection morning!”

So, well done Hullavington, and let’s hope that the litter droppers sharpen up their act and bin their litter or take it home in the future.
