Harfest funds Workshops
at School
Two musical workshops at Hullavington
School were funded by £1000 from the proceeds of last year’s Harfest.
Anup Biswas, a world class professional cellist, originally from
West Bengal, runs workshops in schools to support an orphanage in
Calcutta. The workshop at Hullavington began with Anup performing 5
classical pieces, accompanied by a very surprised Key Stage 2
teacher Jen Boland who had no prior warning of her role. Anup had
with him a varied collection of instruments - bells, drums
traditional stringed instruments - which he encouraged the children
to play in small groups. There were wonderful rhythms, unusual
backings for the cello, clapped sequences and some singing. It was
fun, the children were fascinated and were treated to a very complex
and beautiful cello piece to end the session.
The
drumming workshop in June was a great contrast. John from Drumcrazy
held a workshop offering many different types and sizes of drums.
For their final concert, he selected pupils to play particular
instruments and before long the hall vibrated with percussive power.
It was immediate and compelling and held both the children and
observers in thrall. The children had worked on melody, rhythm,
harmony, control, discipline and responsiveness. From the smiles on
their faces it was clear that they had enjoyed their learning
enormously.
Recorders at Malmesbury
Abbey
Hullavington Branch of the Society of Recorder Players will be
playing in a free lunchtime concert at Malmesbury Abbey on July 25
from 1pm. The group, who have played together since January, will
play a selection of works both ancient and modern, under the musical
direction of Tyrone Harry.
Hullavington WI
July has been a busy month. The WI
cake stall achieved sales of £121.50 at Hullavington School Fete.
Eleven members of Hullavington WI went to Salisbury to celebrate 90
years of the Women’s Institute in Wiltshire. It was a truly
memorable evening, including the unforgettable experience of Elvis
Presley joining with 1100 women from 120 WIs for a resounding
rendition of Jerusalem.
At the regular meeting, Margaret Smith and Diane McLaren
gave an inspirational talk about Family History. They illustrated
the various techniques and sources for research with true stories
they had discovered about their own families. Margaret’s
great-grandmother was the daughter of a Scottish schoolmaster, and
we saw the documents which filled out the details of her life.
Diane’s family had a French connection, and mysteries to be teased
out by careful study of documents, postcards and old photos.
The next WI meeting will
be a midday barbecue at the home of our president on 19 August.
