WI
Victoria Humphries enthralled members of Hullavington WI with her
account of an all women journey to the North Pole. With her mother, Sue
Riches, she was part of a relay team who made the journey on foot, ten
years ago. The selection process for the team called for an ability to
laugh in the face of adversity, and involved cold and rigorous training
before leaving the UK. One of the most disquieting aspects of camping on
the polar ice was that there are no maps as the ice is constantly
shifting and rotating. The team had to haul sledges weighing 140lb,
despite having only minimal equipment. One of the most serious hazards
was when the ice made a sound like a tube train rushing out of a tunnel
and cracked apart or rose to the height of a double-decker bus in
pressure ridges. Mrs Humphries described how her mother fell through
some new ice and both ended up swimming for their lives in the icy
water. The practicalities of daily life in such an uncompromising
environment led to many questions from the audience.
The winner of the competition was Alison Ayliffe, and the runner-up was
Janet Mitchell. The next WI meeting will be a garden meeting and
barbecue at the home of Isobel Acott, on July 16.
