Hullavington WI
Hullavington Village Hall was packed when WI members were delighted and inspired by a talk about leather from Valerie Michael of Tetbury. Mrs Michael has worked with leather for more than thirty years, and a catalyst for her enthusiasm was a display of leather through the ages at the Abingdon Museum in Northampton, which includes a wallet once owned by Keates, and Isaac Newton’s globe. The WI women were able to see, sniff and feel leather tanned in a traditional way using bark, including some which had survived a shipwreck in 1786, was salvaged in 1974, and is now being hand-stitched into exclusive leather goods. It seemed very easy to stitch through leather, using an awl and a needle at either end of the waxed linen thread, and Mrs Michael’s stitches were impeccably even. However, she is a world authority on leatherwork, having written a Leatherworking Handbook, and trained the staff of well-known fashion houses in leather work.

The competition winners were Viv Henderson and Mary Williams. The next meeting will be a talk from Bill Alexander about “Life in the Theatre” on 20 February, to which new members are welcome. Visitors are also invited at a small charge.

Film Club
A new season for the Hullavington Film club began in January. It meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month in the village hall. Doors open at 7 pm for a 7:30pm prompt start. The films are mainly modern but the old oldie is also shown. If you would like to join up just come along on the night or contact Sarah Harmer on (01666) 837704 for further details.

Neighbourhood Watch
We have had two burglaries in the village this week and Hullavington residents are asked to look out for a green land Rover Reg. N24 JCL, which was stolen from the pub car park, also any unidentified vehicles left in a road. These might have been overlooked due to the recent flooding but could be connected to the burglary at the pub.
Please keep cars and garages and homes locked and if you see any thing suspicious please phone the local Police asking for Steve Humphries or contact Linda Hadley at 01666 837096.

The local police have informed us that the "Nottingham Knockers" are in the area again. They are a gang who door to door sell dusters, tea towels etc. but, although not breaking the law, can be intimidating. The elderly and more vulnerable could be easily frightened, They have been known to knock on windows if no-one comes the door. Two seen recently were aged 18 to 20 wearing day glow jackets. If anyone feels concerned or threatened they should phone the police on 0845 408 7000
