Ramblers Walk
with Mud-wrestling
Hullavington Ramblers
took to the footpaths on December 27 for an invigorating, short, local
walk to the west of the village. The recent downpours meant that the
going was heavy, with numerous unexpected streams to cross and swamps to
negotiate, but it was so enjoyable that a splinter group strode out
again on New Year’s Day round Castle Combe where they were able to sit
outside in the pub garden.
Poetry Group
Rita Croft, who died
unexpectedly of meningitis before Christmas, was specially remembered by
the poetry group who had planned a small birthday celebration for her on
January 2. It is hoped that the group will be able to publish a
selection of Rita’s gentle and thought-provoking poems later in the
year.
Group members, who
read a selection from the works of Byron, enjoyed his more vivid
descriptions and the liberties he took with rhyme. ‘The Destruction of
Sennacherib’ was universally popular. Three poems were read by local
aspiring poets on the subject of ‘Dreams’.
The next meeting, on 6
February will look at the poetry of John Masefield, and the suggested
theme for poetry-writing is ‘Time’.
The Star Inn
Quiz
The Quiz at the Star
Inn on 29 December raised over £65 for the Meningitis Trust in memory of
Rita Croft.
Hullavington
WI
Hullavington
WI has been very active over
the Christmas period. The Christmas party filled Evelyn’s home to
bursting point and involved a log fire, a splendid spread and much
hilarity. The prize for a Christmas cracker was won by Viv Henderson,
and Joan Shaw, who interpreted the theme rather differently, was the
runner-up.
January started well
with a win for the Scrabble team, and a pub lunch. The next meeting will
be on January 16 at 2pm, when Mrs Valerie Michael will be giving a talk
in the Village Hall about leather.
