Hullavington WI
Hullavington’s flourishing WI held their Annual Meeting on Wednesday
21st March. They now have 22 members and are going from strength to strength in
the new Village Hall. The President, Isobel Acott, is on the Public Affairs
Committee of the County Executive, and Hullavington takes part in the scrabble
league, has quiz teams, and two members have taken advantage of bursaries to
Denman College.
WI meetings, which are held at 2pm on the third Wednesday of each month, have
encompassed a range of subjects and have been well attended. The WI continues to
maintain the splashes of floral colour round the village, with flower tubs at
the hall, a border at the churchyard, and a garden project. Two mature trees
were also planted at the entrance to the cemetery. Other community activities
have included providing refreshments for the many events in the Village Hall.
Two more members have joined the committee, Mary Williams and Pat Harper. The
competition, an old book, was won by Maggie Dyson and the meeting concluded with
a hilarious beetle drive, the winner being Eileen Fry.
The next meeting will be on 18th April with a talk by Captain I Gibb entitled
“From Cadet to Commodore”.
Galloping Granny
Galloping Granny Alison Ayliffe, from Watts Lane, Hullavington, has run another
half marathon at Bath on Sunday, and looks to raise £200 in sponsorship for the
Open Blue Bus. Mrs Ayliffe, 71, raised a similar sum for the Williams Foundation
at the Stroud half marathon in October, but on this occasion she was joined by
her daughter-in-law Kate, and friends from Hullavington. Mrs Ayliffe completed
the course in just over three hours.
Ramblers Walk
Despite the clocks going back, 13 people and a dog turned out on
Sunday for a morning walk to the west of the village. The railway was crossed at
Farleaze and at Happylands Bridge in Hill Hayes, and views of the church and
village were seen across the fields, whilst the group was serenaded by skylarks.
Violets were flowering and the blackthorn was in blossom. The walk was circular,
beginning and ending at the Star Inn.
Village Website
If you have access to the internet, don’t miss the fantastic
Hullavington village website at www.hullavington.info. It is maintained by Paul
Hadley and Alan Jones, and contains many facts and reminiscences about the
village, a range of interesting photos, links to local groups and much more.
