Ladies’ Pamper Night
The Ladies’ Pamper Night at Hullavington Village Hall last Friday looks
to raise over £800 for the Home School Association (HSA). The evening
started with a calm hum of activity as therapeutic and beauty treatments
were sampled, then rose to a crescendo of excitement when the bold
volunteers, all men, came along for a sponsored leg wax. Particular
commendation for bravery goes to Danny Firth, the Chair of Governors,
who not only had a leg wax but also had chest and armpit hair removed
for a price, and to the amusement of the watching crowd. Antony Hudd
from the Star Inn had chest hair removed. “It’s itchy!” he exclaimed,
when asked how it felt. John Barlow, the Head Teacher, Kevin Tillotson
and Frank Chamberlain, the football coach, also submitted to depilation
for the funds. Huge thanks are due to them, to the stall-holders and to
the ladies who supported the evening.
A Decade of Rambling
Seventeen ramblers and a dog caught the train at Bradford-on-Avon on
Sunday when Hullavington Ramblers took a commemorative nine-mile walk
along the Kennett & Avon canal from Bath to Bradford. They were joined
by a lone cyclist from the village, and despite the delays on the train,
made it to the pub five minutes before they stopped serving food. The
weather was beautiful and a hot air balloon was ready to pose beside
Bath Abbey for a photo-shot in a clear blue sky.
Poetry Group
“Is there anybody there?” There was certainly a good turn-out for the
poetry of Walter de la Mare last Wednesday, and several aspiring poets
had worked on the theme of “Home”. As always, the theme was interpreted
very differently by the writers, with two poignant contributions which
explored the idea of homelessness. Folders of work by Hullavington poets
were distributed by Eileen Fry whose husband Nick made the cakes. The
next meeting will be on November 7 when the poet will be Hilaire Belloc,
and the poetry theme will be “If”.
