Naked and Village Voices
Hullavington’s Village Voices started the music for a great vocal
experience in the Village Hall on Saturday. The group, under the
leadership of Chris Samuel, celebrated their fist year as a choir with a
wide range of songs from the Wild West to the Welsh Valleys, much to the
appreciation of their audience. Naked Voices, who followed them on to
the stage, offered an astonishment of musical prowess. Their repertoire
extended over a vast range of music, from the raunchy jazz of “In these
shoes” to the vocal clarity and precision of Eric Satie’s “Gymnopedie”.
The only instrument used to produce such a range of sound and harmony
was the human voice, and all was choreographed to create a very lively
evening. The entertainment finished with a lively rendition of the
Hippopotamus Song with the audience adding weight to the chorus. To find
out more about Naked Voices, see www.nakedvoices.co.uk . If you would
like to join in with the singing, Village Voices meet on Fridays from
2-4pm.

Coal Canal Guided Walk
An informative day out was enjoyed by 14 people and three dogs, who
followed the course of the disused Somerset Coal Canal on Sunday. Adrian
Tuddenham, guide for the day, pointed out many of the structures that
still exist, and explained how the locks are being restored, despite the
damage caused by tree roots and other vegetation.
The canal used an early form of boat-lift and we found how the directors
of the canal company were nearly suffocated when they used the lift,
which was not designed to carry passengers. The industrial archeology of
the area involved several modified plans for the canal, culminating in a
series of 22 locks, many of which are still visible, and part of the
disused Somerset and Dorset Railway.
