Hullavington Christmas Tree 2006

As ever we'd  ordered our tree from Foxley nursery as they always give such reliable, helpful and  friendly  service. They'd  been busy this Christmas, which is really good to hear, and were a bit stretched on Saturday as they had to  man their  pitch at  Malmesbury  Farmers market as well as make deliveries.   I got a call from them  asking if  they could deliver early and could we  help  them unload the tree. So a sleepy  Pete Malaband, John Samuels and myself beetled   down to the church yard to give  them a hand.

Later in the day  the regular Christmas tree  group  mustered  around the  tree to   put it up.  As usual, when we plugged in the lights they flatly refused to work.  I'd had all year to   sort them out, but, well,  you know how it is,  it did not get done and there we were on a bright, cold and sunny morn  trying to make them work.  The gremlins gradually succumbed to the magic of Roger Panamaby's Swiss Army Knife and the lights were soon twinkling  away.   As a group we have been putting the Village tree up for a number of years now  and we soon had the thing upright. With the aid of Jon Clancy's fishing net  we strung the lights  and then  switched on.   And:  ziltch, nothing, not a glimmer. The language would have been real blue but, well, we were in the church yard so we just muttered a lot.  Simon  Durrant  then  appeared, as if by magic, with tea, biscuits and a large ladder.  The ladder was old and rickity, and the bottom rung broke when I stood on it. None of us were too keen to go up the ladder to find the fault and we argued for a bit about who it should be. It seemed like the ideal time for democracy, so  we all voted for  Roger as it was clearly another mission for his Swiss Army  knife ( Tis a wonderful thing this Democracy. It might even catch on ).   There's  not much that can't be fixed by Roger and his Swiss Army Knife, which in his hands is more like a magic wand. The lights soon surrendered and burned brightly once again. We were getting cold by now and Yvonne arrived just in time with coffee and her home made apple cake.

Many thanks to those partaking in the  erection of the tree:

Roger Parnaby
Jon Clancy
Graham Stokes
