Population of Hullavington
1801-2001
(Population data taken from
official government census figures)
Researched and compiled by Paul Hadley
Over the 200 years between
1801 and 2001 the population of Hullavington has grown from 395 to 1247,
that being a c 300% increase.
There have been a number of perturbations
in the population, some readily explainable such as: the influx of
navvies to
build the railway in the
late 1890s and their departure before the census of 1911;
there is also the increase in the 1961 census figure due to
the building of Wellington Place. The drop in population between 1871 and
1891 of 191 (26%) is staggering. There was a lot of emigration at this
time and better registration, but I can't see this accounting for any
where near the 26% decline.
Since 1951, the population has over
doubled and the rate of increase continues apace. This large increase is
set against as backdrop of decreasing
village shops, pubs, garages etc.
And to illustrate this: in the 1960s there were
4 shops, 2 garages and 2 pubs , today we have 1 shop, 1 garage and 1 pub.
There is also an increase in traffic using basically the same local roads
that were here a century or more ago.
The school has steadily been improved from the
first free national school built in 1833 to
what we have now.

This is a large decline in the order of 10% and may
well have something to do with the camp. If anyone has any info on this
