WORLD AEROBATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS
AT RAF HULLAVINGTON 1970

In 1970 the World Aerobatics Championships came to Britain for the first time in their history when they  were staged at RAF Hullavington. The championships (the 6th in the series) took place between 13th and 26th July 1970. The Soviet pilot Igor Egorov won the individual championship, the Aresti Cup and the United States team of Bob Herendeen, Charlie Hillard and Gene Soucy took the team event, the Nesterov Cup.

To commemorate the event RAF Hullavington sponsored a first day cover depicting the Siskin aircraft and franked with the Alcock and Brown commemorative stamp. This was  postmarked with a special BFPO 1117 handstamp on July 13th 1970, the opening day  of the championships. All covers were flown aerobatically in a British Team aircraft.  The covers cost 5/- (25p) each and all profits were donated to the RAF Museum  (Hendon) Appeal Fund.
