“Within these Walls”

Thanks to Janice Tiley for submitting this

What a story you could tell us if you could talk.  Hundreds of children started school at an early age, some younger than five - within these walls they learnt to read and write and all kinds of lessons until they were fourteen, when they went their different ways out into the wide world to earn their living.

Did they ever forget you old school?  No, never.  The married, had children and the next and the next generations were taught to read and write and so on - within these walls.

Voting took place – within these walls.  Concerts and other activities were enjoyed – within these walls.

Old school you were built of stone and your walls are very strong and thick.  For your size you have lovely rooms, although with age your boards on the floor were very rough in places.  You have two lovely arch-shaped windows on the right hand side.  You have two steps up to your large stone-built porch, with stone shaped windows each side.  Two swing doors, clasps in the middle.  Your door was painted green.  In a little square in the roof is the old school bell.  It rang twice a day to tell the children it was school time – within these walls.  How you would be missed if you weren’t there.  Our hearts would be broken.  You’re our dear old friend and we love you so much.  When we pass by we look with pride upon you.  Stay up another 150 years old school so that many, many more children can learn – within these walls.

Many people have happy memories of you old school – within these walls.  Long may you stand firm and strong.  We would be lost without you, old Hullington school.
