This photo shows how the railway engineers
constructed the vaulting for the arches. They would put up wooden
shuttering to the shape of the arch they wanted then laid the
bricks and concrete over it in layers. Once the arch was finished
they would remove the shuttering and pray.
The classical round arches were
used by the ancients in Greece and Rome and they used basically
the same methods.
