Hullavington Village Hall Management

Committee

 Report September 2010

The Passing of Victor Rawlins

The Village Hall Management Committee was saddened by the recent passing of Victor Rawlins. Victor had always been a staunch supporter of the Village Hall and for many years represented the Short Mat Bowls group on the hall committee. He often contributed financially to the hall. For both his 80th and 85th birthday celebrations his request was that any gift to him should be in the form of a donation to the village hall. A number of years a go he personally commissioned aerial photographs of the village and copies were sold with the profits again going to the hall. When the old hall burnt down in 2004 he immediately opened his barn for the storage of all that could be salvaged.

While the present hall was being planned we will always remember his regular, slightly tongue in cheek comment, ‘I hope the new hall floor will be suitable for Short Mat Bowls’. He was a wonderful character and will be sadly missed and the Hall Committee expresses its sincere condolences to his family.

The Village Hall Committee further offers condolences to the families of Alan Stalker and Geoffrey Maddock, who both passed away recently, both of whom were members of the Short Mat Bowls club.

 Hall Maintenance Tasks

We again thank those members of the committee who gave their time recently to re-seal the hall floor and in particular Peter Parry-Williams who organised and led the exercise.

Rural Arts Wiltshire – Hamlet – Saturday 30th October.

The next RAW event in the Village Hall is a performance of Hamlet by the Watermill on Tour/Two Gents Productions in the Village Hall on Saturday 30th October. The distinctive ‘township’ style of Two Gents relies entirely on the charm of its two performers to work. The two of them play all the roles with total confidence, switching from Hamlet to Ophelia. The audience is the third actor in this production: fellow conspirators with Hamlet one moment, and meek subjects of the King the next.

It should be an interesting and exciting evening. Tickets from Anna Durrant.

Village Autumn Show – Sep 4th – Village Hall

Once again we enjoyed a very successful Autumn Show on September 4th in the Village Hall, and we give our sincere thanks to Jebbie and Duddley Hewitt for all their hard work in organising it and all the many other helpers both on the day and on the Friday evening. It was a lovely day with entries holding up well. A big thank you to everyone who made the effort to enter and come along on the afternoon. Without entries there is no show and it is an important event in the village calendar.

A poignant touch was the display of a basket of vegetables picked by Victor Rawlins’ daughter from his garden. Victor always entered his vegetables into the show and often entered the collection of vegetables class using the basket provided by his daughter.  When the village was without the Village Hall the Autumn show was held in his barn.

Lights still being left on in the Village Hall

We continue to get reports of lights being left on over night in the Hall, particularly the toilet lights. Could we again emphasise the need for users to check these areas in particular before leaving the hall.

The 200 Club – Membership Vacancies

The 200 Club continues to provide an extremely valuable source of income to the Village Hall. At the present time there are some places available so if you are not a member please be considering it. October is the start of the 200 Club financial year and is therefore just the time to join. Cash prizes every month. Contact John Greenwood on 01666 837227 for further information.
