Malmesbury WEA, a branch of the national voluntary adult education
association, is looking forward to a running 2 courses in
Hullavington Village Hall. This is a new location for WEA
courses and is in the nature of a trial to see if there is
sufficient interest and demand to hold courses in Hullavington on
a regular basis..
Over the years, I've attended a number of
WEA courses and have thoroughly enjoyed them all; they have ranged
across a wide spectrum; including: medieval history,
oceans and their impact on the weather, music appreciation,
literary subjects, the life and works of Brunel. etc.
So, as you can see, the subjects are very diverse. To gain
an idea of potential demand, a questionnaire will be
available, during the 2 trial courses, where you can feed in
the type of courses you might be interested in attending at Hullavington
Village hall. Although the two trial courses are during the daytime, it
may also be possible to have an evening class if the demand is there
There are no exams to worry about,
you just come along and enjoy your chosen course in the company of
others with a similar subject interest.
The course tutors are all carefully
chosen by the WEA and are of a high calibre; many being
professionals working directly in the field of the subject they
will be talking about.
At the moment,
two courses are planned: one a day school on the Archaeology
of North Wiltshire (see below for details) by Hullavington's own
Mark Collard, who many or you will remembered from the very
interesting talk he gave us
about 4 years back in the old village hall before it burnt down.
If, whilst out walking or digging the garden, you have found any
interesting artefacts; like: shards of pottery,
metal, coins etc, then please bring them along
and Mark will hopefully be able to identify them and say where
they fit into our local archaeological scene. The
other course is a daytime one beginning on Thursday
morning the 4th Oct 07 from 10 until 11:45 am. It is
led by the
very popular literature lecturer, John Chambers. His 8 week course on a
selection of 20th century writers and poets called ‘From Bloomsbury to
Booker’ (see below for details)

The Archaeology of
North Wiltshire’ by Mark Collard MIFA, BA, a senior employee of
Cotswold Archaeology
the well known rescue organisation employed on development sites.
The day school will run from 10.00am until 4.45pm. It will introduce
the rich archaeological heritage of north Wiltshire (including
Malmesbury, Sherston, Chippenham and Hullavington) drawing on the
results of recent local excavations, fieldwork and research. The fee
is £15. Once again prior enrolment is essential. A cold buffet
lunch, prepared fleshly on the day by
the Star
Inn
of Hullavington, can be ordered for £5:50, alternatively,
you can bring your own lunch.
