Report on The 2007 Programme
 held at Hullavington

The Archaeological Day School held on Oct 27th  2007 covered  a lot of ground and was very warmly received by the 36 attendees. Mark Collard, the course tutor, covered a lot of ground during the  day; including:

  • an insight into the life of a commercial archaeologist and the differences between his role as a commercial archaeologist working for Cotswold archaeology and that of the universities role in  research archaeology.
  • the changing world of archaeology from the days of the early pioneers to the more scientific approach used today.

  • the  archaeological evidence of  the continual occupation of our area from  the Mesolithic flint scatters (c8000 bc); then  through the Neolithic remnant barrows; Bronze & Iron  age artefacts; Roman settlements in Hullavington, Stanton etc;  the Saxon beginnings of the Hullavington we know today, the medieval and on to our more recent past.

  • Recent archaeological discoveries  in NW Wilts

If you are interested in archaeology, then you may wish to attend the 8 week WEA course to be held in Malmesbury. The course tutor is again Mark Collard and the course title is "The Making of Wiltshire seen Through Modern Archaeology"

The eight week Literary Course titled "From Bloomsbury to Booker", which ran from 4th Oct to the 29th Nov on Thursday mornings, covered the changing face and styles of  novels and poetry  from the days of the 'Bloomsbury set' to that of modern day Booker prize candidates.  The tutor, John Chambers,  led us through a series of novels including Virginia Wolfe's, The Lighthouse; The Bell by Iris Murdoch;  The Remains of The Day by Kazuo Ishiguro and Saturday by  Ian McEwan; also  the poets: Sylvia Plath, Louis MacNeice, Phillip Larkin and Carol Duffy.   This course was attended by 20 people all of whom  were  very impressed and found John's  enthusiasm to be seriously infectious. The  group are very keen to see another course by John and we  will endeavour to  persuade him to tutor another course during 2008/2009.
