Hullavington Ramblers

Walk Around Avebury Area
Sunday 24th Feb 2008

A circular walk of around 5 miles, with fine views and archaeological remains round every corner.

Meet at 10.30 in the National Trust car-park on the edge of the which is on the A4361, which is the road which comes past Avebury Trusloe from the A4.

Exploring the prehistoric downland landscape around Avebury

Leaving Avebury we head to Silbury Hill, then over the A4 to West Kennet Neolithic Long Barrow. After communing with our ancestors the route goes down and along the Kennet valley from Swallowhead Springs towards East Kennet. The river is still as full as I have seen it and really makes a great contribution to the winter landscape. We then climb (gently) up to Overton Hill and the fine collection of Bronze Age barrows before turning along the Ridgeway and back to Avebury via the avenue of prehistoric standing stones to the Red Lion in the heart of the village in time for lunch.

When doing the walk this weekend on a crisp February morning there were occasional patches of sogginess, and some stiles. No cows but as a warning to any ovinophobes sheep were in evidence.

Parking is free for members of the National Trust and English Heritage (remember to bring your car sticker and  membership number), or £5 pay and display for non-members.
