Rambling News July & Aug 07
We’ve not had so many events and walks over
this summer and the walks we have had have not been so well attended as they
once were. I guess the weather has played a big part in this, so let’s hope for
a decent Autumn. We are in process of putting together a new walks and events
programme which will be out soon. If you would like to join us on one of our
walks, you would be very welcome. Dogs and children are also welcome, provided
their owners are well behaved. Our walks vary from short 2 mile summer midweek
strolls, to 4 to 5 mile morning or afternoon rambles, to 10 mile day walks.
There is also the opportunity to do more demanding hikes in the Brecon Beacons
and Black Mountains. So there is something for everyone. For more information

Although we have not done so much walking
as a group, there has been a fair amount of peripheral activity. Small groups of
us have walked a number of times in the Brecon Beacons and the Black mountains.
This tends to be at short notice when we see a decent day coming up. Keith and
myself had a Noah’s Ark special when doing a variation of the Brecons Horseshoe.
The rain was horizontal with visibility on Pen Y Fan down to a couple of yards.
As we dropped off the summit down towards Gribyn, a full company of Paratroopers
appeared out of the clag. They’d come up the easy way and were cussing a lot and
couldn’t believe we were out there doing it for pleasure.

We also explored another area of Wales recently; namely Llanwrtyd Wells and it
looks really good for walking. It is the world centre for “Bog Snorkeling” and
many walking events. The pub (Nuedd Arms) is a great place with its own brewery
and has one of those wet nosed friendly dogs. You know the sort; they’re not
born but gain life through Walt Disney animations. Well this mutt was friendly
enough on the first day but on the Sunday it was grumpy as hell and growled all
the time. Evidently it had a hangover and, according to the land lady, it goes
on a bender round the 3 pubs in the town every Saturday night and ain’t a happy
mutt on Sundays

Walk & Event Reports
Many thanks go to John & Tina for all their hard work in organizing and hosting
the Annual Summer BBQ in July. It was later in the month than usual and a number
of regulars were away on holiday, which kept the numbers down to around 30. We
always have a barrel or 2 of real ale for the beards and belly brigade, which in
the past has run dry early on in the afternoon to a chorus of groans. But not
this year where it lasted the duration, with a pint or two remaining for
breakfast. I wonder why? Hmmmm…..so who was missing from this year’s BBQ then?
Apologies for absence were received from Melvyn, Alan Jones, Keith Walker,
Geraldine, Alision Alyffe and Barbara Lister. So….. looks like it’s been the
lasses quaffing all the ale then.
The July walk was stood down due to many people being away and, of course, our
old friend the weather. Bob & Sue organized the August walk around Lacock - an
excellent choice for a circular walk- and we had a delightful 4 to 5 mile stroll
to the south west taking in Bowden Hill and Bewley Common. It was a varied walk
on a sunny day and, as we walked along the river bank, we were amazed to see the
high water flood mark some 3 to 4 metres above the current river level.
